Bio-based PLA Film for Fresh Herbs and Cut Flowers
Whether fresh cut flowers, potted or cut herbs: horticultural products must not only be optimally protected at the point of sale but also presented attractively. With Planova®, SÜDPACK introduces a bio-based and biodegradable PLA film solution that is highly transparent, breathable, and sturdy. It is particularly suitable for manufacturing conical packaging, known as Conical Sleeves.
The global market for cut flower packaging is growing rapidly and is projected to rise from around six billion to over 8.5 billion US dollars in the next six years. In Germany, more than two-thirds of all cut flowers are already sold pre-packaged in grocery retail, garden centers, and at gas stations. The global market for fresh potted and cut herbs is also expanding quickly, with grocery retail and garden centers dominating the sales segment.
Regulatory restrictions on conventional plastics, increasing packaging waste volumes, and a focus on sustainability require solutions capable of meeting the PPWR regulations by 2030. Planova films based on PLA combine ecological advantages with high performance. The material is derived from renewable raw materials such as sugarcane or corn starch, reducing reliance on fossil resources.
The thin yet sturdy Planova film reliably protects delicate flowers, stems, and herbs from breakage and damage. High transparency and a brilliant gloss allow for a clear view of the product's freshness, quality, and color. The molecular structure of PLA makes the films gas-permeable, eliminating the need for micro-perforation. This effectively dissipates moisture, enhances air circulation, and prevents spoilage. Unlike paper, the material does not break down when exposed to water, ensuring that both protective function and visual appeal remain fully intact.
Planova films are available in thicknesses of 15 to 100 µm and widths of 200 to 2,300 mm. For Conical Sleeves, a 25 µm variant is used, which offers high rigidity despite its thinness. The films are also highly printable, enabling customized branding and consumer information.
